I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.
The weather on Saturday was just stunning. Krystie, Milly, Oakey and I all went for an early morning walk on Ocean beach and we were fortunate enough to spot a pod of dolphins.
I know not the best pic but what can I say
Sunday morning took me out to the back of Shine Falls to Pohokura Road. For those that don’t know, this tramp is a challenging one. The first 35 minutes is straight up for what feels like a near vertical climb on the edge of a mountain. I have done this tramp 3 times but each and every time my stomach sinks and heart rate shoots through the roof…not because it’s a challenging tramp but because it scares the SH*T out of me.
So today I thought I would write about doing things that scare the SH*T out of you and getting out of your comfort zone
Too much of our society today is based around one word : comfort. We wake up in the morning and get out of our super comfy ”sleepyhead” bed to eat our convenient two minute microwavable breakfast in our ergonomically designed chair. We then jump in the car with heated seats arrive at work and spend the rest of the day sitting down tapping on keys. We then drive home via the drive-through for dinner because let’s face it, it has been a pretty exhausting day.
This ”comfortable lifestyle” has given us poor nutritional choices and a lack of physical activity. It’s not really a surprise that we have an obesity problem is it?
It can be pretty hard to give up the comfort zone but know that is where the magic happens. Often people have great intentions but as soon as they hit any form of discomfort they throw their hands in the air and say this is all too hard for me and simply revert back to the easy more comfortable way of doing things.
If you go to the gym and do the same old thing every day, you’re not getting stronger, you’re not getting faster, you’re not getting more athletic… you’re just getting really good at doing the same thing. Your muscles are built when they are forced to adapt to a new stimuli, a new load, more repetitions or less rest time. The goal of each workout is to progress whether it be more reps, sets, a heavier load etc
In order to succeed one must push themselves beyond their current limits.
So what exists outside of your comfort zone that you are afraid of?
- Do you not go to the gym for fear of ridicule? For fear of looking stupid?
- Do you skip runs with your co-workers because you’re worried you’re ”too big” ”too slow” ”out of shape?”
Here is my challenge to you – do one thing that scares you everyday for 7 days.
- Try a new foreign food
- Go and have a workout in a public place
- Cold call a new business opportunity
- Raise your hand in the meeting/class
- Climb up high
- Hold the spider
- Speak in public
- Throw yourself off the cliff (attached to something of course)
Me just about to be dropped off the side of a 109 meter high canyon tied to a chair
So there you have it. Get yourself out of that comfort zone
