If you have made it this far you are in for a real treat. This is the extreme elite level fitness bucket list. If you have achieved any of these then I take my hat off to you
1 – Marathon Des Sables
In just six days you will run over 250km (156 miles) through endless dunes, over rocky jebels, and across white-hot salt plains. The sun will be your constant enemy with temperatures regularly reaching 50 centigrade. The sand will be your constant companion, clouds of it under your feet, sheets of it stinging your eyes and lots of it chafing where it shouldn’t.
A marathon a day for 6 days…oh and one day is a double marathon and did I mention it was through the desert… and you have to carry all your gear
Marathon Des Sables is known as the world’s toughest foot race. It has been on my bucket list for a while and I have made my excuses over the years. From the fact I am not the best runner to the fact that there is a huge waiting list and it costs over 12k once you have calculated for equipment, flights accommodation and the 4k entry fee. That’s a fair whack to suffer for a week.
If anyone is keen.. Let me know ….Tony? Logan? Dave? Stew? Potential? ….Yes I just called you all out!
2 – The 1000 pound Club
A.K.A the 454kg Club for us Kiwi’s. This is a powerlifting club that to become a member you have to squat, deadlift and bench more than a total of 1000 pounds. My personal numbers are 160kg deadlift. 100kg bench and a 120kg squat. That’s a total of 380kg. Only another 70kg to find. Better get lifting!
3 – Sealfit Kokoro 50 Hour Challenge
Mental toughness is what you need. This is modelled after the navy seals hell week. With a 30% pass rate you have to be prepared for a butt kicking. There is no sleeping for the 50 hours and expect to be head in the waves at 2am doing flutter kicks.

4 – The Barkley Marathons
The Barkley Marathons is an ultramarathon trail race of 160k which needs to be completed in less than 60 hours. It is said to be the toughest trail race in the world, with no aid stations and 16,500 meters of accumulated vertical climb. The entry fee is $1.60 and so far only 15 runners have ever completed the race 🙂
If you have Netflix I highly recommend the documentary. Even if you’re not a runner it’s a great watch
5 – The Race Across America
Known as the world’s toughest bicycle race. The Race Across America or RAAM can be completed in teams however if you’re a serious hardcore rider you may want to give this a go on your own. Its 30% longer than the Tour De France yet you are expected to complete it in half the time with no rest days. Starting in LA and finishing in Maryland, crossing 12 states and passing through 88 counties. Less than 200 races have completed it solo and it is said that if you want to complete it within the 12 day time frame you need to sleep less than 4 hours a night. That’s 20 hours of riding a day… That’s a lot of bike time!!
