Why willpower will fail you

Happy Monday

How was your weekend?

In this weeks newsletter I wanted to share some insights on the concept of willpower

Let me ask you a question…

Have you ever set yourself a goal like starting a fitness routine, eating more vegetables or getting to sleep earlier only to fall off the wagon a few days later

That’s a rhetorical question, of course

Conventional wisdom suggest that you have no self control, lack of willpower or you are just plain lazy.

The problem with this type of thinking is that it leads to negative emotions of guilt and shame surrounding your ‘’unmotivated self’’

The question is do you have a willpower deficiency or do you just need to set the game up in a different way?

Growing research suggests that people who have better self control do so for 2 major reasons

1 – They have better habits

2 – They structure their surroundings in a way that reduces the need to call on willpower

For example – If you exercise at the same time of day, for a long enough period of time, it becomes a habit and just something you do in the exact same way as brushing your teeth.

Likewise if you don’t keep chippies in your pantry then you’re not going to eat what isn’t there, are you?

Creating good habits and a supportive environment is the key to success. Forget about the ‘what’ your going to do and focus on the ‘how’ your going to do it
