Unless you’re an actor like Ryan Reynolds, Chris Hemsworth or Jenna Dewan then your job doesn’t care if you have washboard abs. Your job doesn’t care if you’re fat. Your job just wants you to be a productive, smart workbee.

Just because your job doesn’t care about your waistline it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. And with a few simple tweaks to your working day, you can offset many of the negative effects of work life and move towards a healthier body and mind

Here are 4 of our favourite tips

1 – You gotta move

Most jobs involve sitting for hours and hours. Sitting in an office chair can really mess you up. It’s bad for your posture, shortening and tightening your hip flexors and encouraging that kyphotic rounded spine, and it’s catastrophic for your waistline due to the sheer level of immobility .

Use the step counter on your smart watch and aim for at least 7 thousand steps per day. Everytime you send an email, reset your posture by sitting up straight. Set an alarm to go off every hour and get up and move. Make coffee, hang out by the printer and make small talk, run up and down the stairs. Whatever it takes, just move for a few minutes before returning to your desk.

2 – Take your own lunch

It takes the same amount of time to cook one chicken breast as it does two, so make two dinners every night and take the other portion for lunch the following day. Not only will it save you money but it will also mean you don’t have to resort to eating whatever high calorie, high carb crap they have at the local cafe.

3 – Identify your shit food triggers and make replacements

Know that Pam from accounts will always bring leftover baking from the weekend. Someone will always have a birthday which will involve cake and Marty from IT wants you to try his grans shortbread. You’re stressed and tired and out of sheer habit you dig in. These triggers are always going to be there, you need to replace them with something else. Have herbal tea instead of a Peanut Slab.

4 – Get yourself a before work activity.

As they say – The early bird catches the worm. What would it feel like to know you have already burned 700 calories while most are still asleep. Go to bed early, wake up early, watch the sunrise and get yourself to Results Fitness for a class. Or consider Yoga, a morning run. Whatever it is, just get moving.
