Beef liver is often called nature’s multivitamin and for good reason

Liver is a powerhouse packed with protein, vitamins and minerals and really is our number one superfood.

Cultures all across the globe have treasured liver for centuries and now in our modern day it’s having a bit of a resurgence due to many health benefits

What is it that makes beef liver so good for you ?

The nutrients in the liver are highly bioavailable, meaning the majority of what you eat is absorbed and assimilated.

Liver and the immune system

Beef liver has rich amounts of vitamin A, iron and copper, which are all needed for healthy immune function.

Rich source of super high quality protein

Protein is essential for muscle repair, growth, and overall health, and beef liver is a phenomenal source. It provides all the essential amino acids your body needs.

Exceptional Vitamin A Content

Good old Beef liver is a stand out when it comes to Vitamin A, which is crucial for vision, immune function and healthy skin

When your mum told you to eat carrots for your vision she wasn’t completely right. Carrots contain beta-carotene, an inactive form of Vitamin A which is far less bioavailable compared to retinol, the active form found in beef liver.

Generous in B vitamins especially B12

B vitamins in beef liver support metabolic functions including red blood cell formation, nerve function, and the production of DNA.

Abundant in iron, specially Heme Iron

Iron is vital for boosting energy and preventing anaemia. Heme iron found in beef liver is by far the most easily absorbed

Supports Detoxification and Metabolism

Beef liver can support the body’s natural detoxification processes and pathways, thanks to its role in metabolising toxins

Sperm and reproduction  – Liver to the rescue

Interestingly researchers examined the eating habits of 189 men aged between 18-22. They found that organ meat intake was associated with a MASSIVE 53% higher sperm count and 8% higher motility compared to those that didn’t eat organs.

Brain function

Many of the nutrients in beef liver support healthy brain function. Copper is involved in brain development and vitamin A has been shown to be essential for both infant and adult brains

Athletic endeavours

Three groups of rats were put into a drum of cold water with no choice but to sink or swim. Group one with no liver or synthetic vitamins swam for 13 mins, group two given synthetic vitamin B swam also for 13 mins. The final group that consumed liver swam for a whopping 63, 83, and 87 minutes before giving up

Conclusion

When I was a little boy I remember watching David Attenbough doing a wildlife documentary. One of the scenes in the show was a lion who stealthily watched, waited and attacked a hyena. The few things I remember and still think about today

1 – The lion didn’t warm up. Lions do the things they are designed to do. They don’t need warm ups because functionally they are perfectly aligned. They don’t spend their days sitting in front of computers or typing and swiping. They don’t mould themselves into the sofa to casually watch netflix. Lions lay around on the hard ground and move their bodies with grace and poise.

2 – Lions basically just eat the liver. When the lion attacked the Hyena it went for the organs, specifically the liver. A lion innately knows what it needs for survival. The muscle meat was left for the vultures and scavengers. The liver, though small, was such a powerhouse for the lion that it didn’t need anything else.

3 – Lions don’t suffer from heart disease, cancer, diabetes or other lifestyle diseases. Lions don’t get auto-immune conditions, arthritis or other chronic disorders. Lions eat liver and live by design.

4 – Be more like a lion for ultimate health. Eat liver, lay on the floor, sprint once in a while, play rough and tumble with your kids and make love.
