I have a love/hate relationship with social media (mostly hate) . Seriously though, I think social media has done some wonderful things in the world. If you want to find a kidney donor for a transplant then social media is where it’s at. If you want to talk politics then social media isn’t the place to do it.
Today I’m gonna talk about social media and the ‘’fitness influencer’’ . It’s not uncommon to see fitness influencers with millions of likes performing silly exercises, circuits that don’t make sense and party tricks.
Its content for entertainment but often lacks substance, depth or some kind of actionable takeaway that might just help someone (other than their own view count)
The majority of the content is narcissistic. Look at me with no top on showing off my six pack while performing jumping push ups onto boxes, muscle ups with medicine balls between their legs and burpees with a somersault.
Here is my issue…
I’m jealous 🙂
Seriously though, these people are teaching people nothing about exercise or training. Most people need to get better at the basics. My mate Bob needs to know how to perform 5 push ups not 5 burpees with backwards somersaults onto a bed of nails
I don’t know about you but when I take a look at these fitness influencers they don’t inspire me they make me feel worse. Like I’m some kind of lazy shit.
If these fitness influencers were more concerned with educating you rather than simply trying to gain as many followers as possible then the social media space might well look a little different.
Truth is that exercise and training is often boring, mundane and very repetitive. Push this, pull that and pick this up. Repeat for 50 years.
Too many people want to wrap fitness up in some shiny wrapping paper and sell it to you as a 28 days to get shredded abs/bum blah blah blah
A good trainer is there to educate YOU, support YOU and do more for you than they would for themselves. YOU, YOUR RESULTS and EXPERIENCE are the priority. An influencer is in it for themselves and their own likes and follows
Be mindful when scrolling the socials. And know the difference between a good trainer and an influencer. If you’re going for an online program then check out credentials and experience. If you see pics of bikini bums and tanned washboard abs then you’re probably in the wrong place.
