Happy Monday
How was your weekend?
As I write this Val Adams has just got a Silver for the shot put. As amazing as that is I am sure many of you were hoping for the gold 🙁
On the flip side the Brits are doing well and currently lying in third on the medal tables. How well did the GB boys go in their cycling team pursuit… truly was gripping stuff
Anyway…
On Friday I was pondering what to write about in this week’s newsletter when Krystie received this facebook message
Though we don’t know the facts this was enough for me to write about water, more specifically why you should consider a water filter.
The human body consists of around 70-75% water. While water plays many key roles in our bodies, waters chief function is to maintain a stable environment inside and around our cells, allowing us to acquire proper nutrition and aiding in the elimination of waste in cells.
Without water we cannot survive!
The problem is that some sources of water has been shown to contain over 300 plus chemicals and pollutants. Among these are
Volatile organic chemicals – such as pesticides, herbicides and other chemical nastys that research has linked to damage in the reproductive system, liver, kidneys and more
Heavy metals – such as lead and mercury have been found in tap water. Research links an overload of heavy metals to a plethora of health diseases. Particularly those around the brain.
Have you ever wondered why dentists have the highest rates of suicide?? Could it be that they spend a lot of time around mercury (again just a thought)
Endocrine disrupting chemicals – chemicals that mimic or interfere with normal hormone regulation.
Over the past fifty years, researchers observed increases in endocrine-sensitive health outcomes. Breast and prostatic cancer incidence increased between 1969 and 1986 ; there was a four-fold increase in ectopic pregnancies (development of the fertilized egg outside of the uterus) in the U.S. between 1970 and 1987 ; the incidence of cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) doubled in the U.K. between 1960 and the mid 1980s ; and there was an approximately 42% decrease in sperm count worldwide between 1940 and 1990.
In London the Thames water supply was tested and significant levels of estrogen mimicking chemicals were found in the water supply from birth control pills.
Fluoride – A very touchy controversial subject. Those that read this, you probably know my stance on fluoride. My intention is not to impose any beliefs on you just to show you some insights. Here are some studies on fluoride.. Make your own mind up
Fluoride given to animals at high doses destroys the male reproductive system. ; Ghosh 2002; Zakrzewska 2002)
“It is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.” — the National Research Council (2006)
There have been 24 studies from China, Iran, India and Mexico that show an association between fluoride exposure and reduced IQ. One research team (Xiang 2003a,b)
Studies by Jennifer Luke (2001) show that fluoride accumulates in the human pineal gland to very high levels. In her Ph.D. thesis, Luke has also shown in animal studies that fluoride reduces melatonin production and leads to an earlier onset of puberty (Luke 1997).
Fluoride negatively impacts thyroid function. In the Ukraine, Bachinskii (1985) found a lowering of thyroid function, among otherwise healthy people
Fluoride causes symptoms of arthritis. Skeletal fluorosis (a fluoride-induced bone and joint disease) mimic the symptoms of arthritis (Singh 1963; Franke 1975; Teotia 1976; Carnow 1981; Czerwinski 1988; DHHS 1991).
On the subject of fluoride did you know it is thought to be believed that the government is trying to control us by adding fluoride to water. According to research fluoride calcifies the pineal gland (this is our third eye. The third eye can be activated to spiritual world frequencies and enables you to have the sense of all knowing, godlike euphoria and oneness all around you.) This calcification shuts down the pineal gland. Once shut down you are susceptible to being controlled.
Do I believe this? Maybe…Maybe NOT. Yes even for a Te Awanga resident it is a little far fetched but none the less I am not going to risk it. 🙂

Anyway on with the post.
Apparently the Hastings District Water Boards answer to this problem is to add more chlorine to the water.
Chlorine – while disinfection is a necessary evil – without it, water borne illnesses would be a constant problem. However drinking a bathing in chlorine has its drawbacks.
In 1992 the American Journal of Public Health published a report that showed a 15% to 35% increase in certain types of cancer for people who consume chlorinated water. This report also stated that much of these effects were due to showering in chlorinated water. Up to half of your chlorine consumption in a day is in the shower.
Chlorine has been linked to various types of cancer, kidney and liver damage, immune system dysfunction, disorders of the nervous system, hardening of the arteries, and birth defects.
“Cancer risk among people using chlorinated water is as much as 93 percent higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine,” according to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality.
“‘Anyone who has ever swum in a chlorinated pool knows firsthand the harsh effects that chlorine can have on eyes, skin and hair. More serious emerging health concerns linked to these chemicals are “lifeguard lung” and “swimmers asthma”
So what can we do about all this ….
Bottled water – The problem with bottled water is
1 – That Havelock North New World had sold out – True story
2 – The chemicals from the plastic bottles leach into the water
3 – Water bottles are a major source of consumer waste each year
Pitcher water filters – Pitcher water filters do remove some of the toxins and do reduce chlorine levels in the water but they don’t remove the pesticides, herbicides or heavy metals. The other problem is that you have to repeatedly replace the cartridges which can become costly
Water filtration systems – Whole house filtration systems are a great option but can be costly.
If you have the budget a reverse osmosis system is a great choice if you don’t then some other options are…
Under the counters – Out of sight and a decent level of filtration
Counter top filters – They use water pressure to force water through the filtration process, which helps make the water both taste better and healthier by removing contaminants. Minimal installation is required and it only takes a little space on the kitchen surface
A good choice http://www.vitality4life.co.nz/aquasana-countertop/
Solid block carbon filters – A great option that removes chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, bacteria, fluoride, heavy metals, nitrates and parasites. On the negative it does require counter space and has to be manually filled
A good option http://www.water-filtering.co.nz/product/big-berkey-water-purifier-system/
Thats pretty much it for today’s post. I hope you enjoyed it and found it informative.
Something a little different
As many of you may know one of my goals is to hopefully inspire you to empower yourself to take control of your own health and wellbeing. That said I thought I would share with you some of the work from people that I have had the opportunity to learn from.
To start with I thought I would bring you some podcasts
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/undergroundwellness/2010/08/05/whats-in-your-water-with-david-getoff
For those that want to get into the nitty gritty of water. It really is important stuff and when David Getoff talks about it I listen 🙂
That’s it
Paul ” If there is no bread let them eat cake” ”If there is no water let them drink wine” and Krystie ” you really shouldn’t write when you are under the influence”
